Traditions of Tolox
The cultural heritage of Tolox tells us about it's rumorous past. There are still remnants of the castle, which once was the center of the Arabic revolts en fierce battles between christians and muslims. The castle is said to have been occupied by the Romans at one time. In the 10th century Tolox was part of the Moorish kingdom of Soleiman, son of Omar den Hafsun. In 921 though the terrain was captured by Abderrahman III. Tolox is a charming place, mostly calm with the exception of two special days.
Shrove Tuesday: the tuesday before Lent and the last day of the yearly carnival of Tolox. This day
is known as 'Dia de los Polvos' (the day of the powder). In a tradition that is said to have it's roots
in Moorish-christian riots in the 16th century the villagers throw talcum powder at each other.
The other day is the feast of the immaculate conception, december the 8th. On this day, locally known as
'La Cencerrada' the local population runs around with bells, making as much racket as possible.
This tradition also seems to reflect Moorish-christian conflicts from the past.
